The purging of NFL head coaches has already begun, as Dennis Green of the Cardinals and Jim Mora of the Falcons were fired yesterday, one day after the close of the regular season. With the likelihood Bill Cowher will leave the Steelers and the possibility Romeo Crennel might be out in Cleveland and Art Shell is probably done in Oakland, there will be plenty of movement in the league's coaching circles. These changes could affect the Giants as they head into the playoffs amid continuing speculation about Tom Coughlin's job security. With as many as five jobs open, there could be plenty of competition in a coaching field that is not considered especially strong.
Debates are raging about how much Coughlin must do - or if making the postseason at 8-8 is already sufficient - to return for a fourth year with the Giants. As time goes by, it appears co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch are more concerned with how the team looks and feels moving forward and less obsessed with the Giants beating the Eagles (which would likely make Coughlin safe) or keeping the game respectable. We all know Eli hasn't been great all the time. I think it's Ely's coaching. Why after 2 1/2 years is Eli making the same mistakes such as throwing off balanced? simple, it's coaching. He has the arm and the intelect, we know that. He needs a good QB coach. It took beloved Phil Simms many years before he was a "good" QB. lets let Eli get some help. When was the last time a Giant QB had back to back 24 TD seasons? Warner, Graham, Brown, Simms, NOPE, it was Tarkenton. Not so bad when you look at others. How about Chad Pennington, 17TD's against 17 int's. Is that great? lets give Eli some time and a good coach. Lets stop being "arm chair QB's".
