The Giants' Super Bowl title defense took a huge blow Sunday when doctors discovered torn cartilage in Osi Umenyiora's left knee, ending his 2008 season before it even began. Umenyiora suffered a torn lateral meniscus, according to the Giants, and he'll undergo surgery on Tuesday. The recovery time, according to a source close to the defensive end, is expected to be 3-4 months.
Umenyiora tore the cartilage in the second quarter of the Giants' 10-7 loss to the Jets on Saturday night, when he tried to rush around the outside of Jets left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson. As Ferguson pushed off, Umenyiora planted his left leg and his foot appeared to get stuck in the turf. Continue
Although I am a huge Patriots fan, I liked Osi Umenyiora. He was dangerous last year against the Patriots in the Super Bowl (obviously). But It does hurt the giants to have him out for the season.
