Giants beat Bills, clinch playoff spot

The New York Giants clinched a playoff berth Sunday, overcoming a Bills team inspired by Kevin Everett's return to the field where he was injured. Brandon Jacobs scored twice as the usually pass-happy Giants leaned heavily on their running attack in a 38-21 win. Kawika Mitchell's 20-yard interception return produced the go-ahead points and sparked a three-touchdown fourth-quarter rally.

The Giants (10-5), who reached the playoffs for a third straight season, fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter, as the Bills came out fired up after Everett addressed the team before the game. It was the tight end's first appearance in Buffalo since he sustained a serious spinal cord injury in the Bills' season opener Sept. 9. Continue

Giants open with Dallas, go to London in the mid-season

The New York Giants will open the 2007 season at Dallas and end at home against Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots. In between, they'll play the first NFL regular-season game in Europe when they face Miami in London in late October. The Giants (8-8) will play five night games for the second straight year in the schedule released on Wednesday, and they will have a Giants Stadium bragging rights game against the Jets on Oct. 7, the first regular-season game between the teams since 2003.

It's also the first game since the Giants and Jets agreed to build a new stadium at the Meadowlands sports complex. The new stadium is scheduled to be finished in 2010. "It's a very, very challenging schedule," said coach Tom Coughlin, whose team was eliminated in the opening round of the playoffs by Philadelphia last season. "Week in and week out, we will be challenged by outstanding opponents. We have five prime-time games, which our team will look forward to with great anticipation. We play the Jets and we have our game in London, which will be very exciting for our fans." Continue

London calls Giants

The NFL will make it official today that the Giants-Dolphins game in the fall will be played in London instead of Miami. The game is expected to be played at Wembley Stadium, and will be scheduled for either late September or early October. Both the Giants and the Dolphins will have a bye the following week.

The announcement is expected to be made at new NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's first State of the NFL press conference today. When it's over, the league will hold an international press conference, which will be attended by Giants quarterback Eli Manning, defensive end Michael Strahan and treasurer Jonathan Tisch. Continue

Fish game likely in London

The Giants' road to Super Bowl XLII likely will include a trip overseas. The NFL is expected to announce in a few weeks that the Giants' regular-season game against the Miami Dolphins in 2007 will be played at London's Wembley Stadium. The Giants would be the visiting team in that game.

Earlier this week, the NFL announced that six teams - Buffalo, Kansas City, Miami, New Orleans, San Francisco and Seattle - were in the running to be the home team for the league's inaugural overseas, regular-season game, which would be played in England or Germany. Every team in the league is expected to play at least one game outside the U.S. during the next 16years.

According to one report yesterday, the NFL will announce next week that the game will be played in London. That report also said it's possible that the Bills will be the road team. But the Giants obviously have a higher profile than the Bills, and sponsors of the game in England reportedly have been pushing for the Giants for more than a year. (Daily News)
